This work is a meditation on potential and vulnerability. The title derives from a gift I received years ago from my father. He had traveled to California and returned with tiny saplings of Sequoiadendron giganteum, the giant sequoia tree; and he gave one sapling to each of his children. This piece is dedicated to his memory.

This work was commissioned by the Japan-USA Musical Perspectives, Miyuki Ito, Director.

Premiere performance happened March 14, 2015 at the Tenri Cultural Institute, New York City. Blair McMillen, piano.
